ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.
We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and
articles as well. Many college and public libraries have microform copies
of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years. In them, you can find
lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time,
make a trip to the library and check it out. Ask a librarian how to get
started and how to print out the articles that you find.

CORNING - Rochester
wrestlers won nine of the 12 titles and Monroe County matmen picked up two more
championships in the Section 5 finals held at Corning Glass Center here last
night.
All five of the Madison
High School grapplers, unbeaten team champions of the Interscholastic League,
who made the semifinal round here yesterday afternoon sailed through both rounds
of competition.
West and East added one
champ each, all but shutting out the Finger Lakes and Steuben County Leagues.
Only non-Monroe County victor was Neil Pipe
of Corning Free Academy in the 180-pound class. He beat Geneva's Dick
Post in last night's final.
Both rounds yesterday
played to sellout crowds of about 800.
In a stinging upset,
Frank Oliveri of East decisioned CFA's Robert Thurber at 133 pounds. Oliveri had
been beaten by Madison's Mel McDowell in
quarter-final action, but the Rochester City champ had to drop out of
competition because of a back injury.
Bob McFarland of Madison
started the run for the Wilson Parkers at 95 pounds with a 4-0 win over
Webster's John Krehling. Other Madison
winners were defending champion Willie Williams
with a 2:44 pin at 103 pounds; Jerry Baker,
127-pounder; Charles McGowan, who beat
East Rochester's Dan Gurecki at 145; and
Greenard Poles, unlimited class, who edged
CFA's Bob Turner, 2-1, thanks to a
time-advantage on an escape.
Spencerport's
Dale Kenyon put the Monroe County League on the
board with a 7-4 decision of Canandaigua Academy's Johnson
at 112 pounds, and Tim Doherty grabbed a
share of the glory for Eastridge with a 1:54 pin of Newark's Tom McLaren
at 165 pounds.
West made it on the
strength of Ray Cole's 5-4 decision of
Brockport's Dick Avery in the 154-pound
class and Franklin champions were Wonder Scott
(who beat East Rochester's Frank Megale)
at 120 pounds and 138-pounder Nate Turner,
who beat another East Rochester boy, Jim Ranscoe.
Not one member of the
Interscholastic League squad which gained the finals was beaten. Seven County
League wrestlers won semifinal round matches, including three members of the
champion East Rochester team - not one of whom could pick up a sectional title.
Tom Vergo, the Bomber
heavyweight, was beaten for only the second time in four years in the
semifinals.
