WOLCOTT — After coming back to beat rival Waterloo Jan. 21, North Rose-Wolcott cleared the biggest obstacle in its bid to claim a second Finger Lakes Central wrestling title in three seasons.
The Cougars finished the job Thursday night, though it did not prove easy.

In a match symbolic of the balance in the league this year, Mike Norton’s 78-second pin in the 145-pound match wrapped up NR-W’s 42-33 victory against visiting Midlakes.

The Cougars, who won all five of their Central encounters to finish as the loop’s only unbeaten squad, outscored Midlakes 18-6 over the final four weight classes. Andy MacEdward started the match-ending surge with a 41-second fall in the 130-pound match. Scott Mourey’s forfeit — NR-W outpointed Midlakes 24-12 on freebies — pushed the hosts’ advantage to 36-27.

Screaming Eagles 140-pounder Morgan Hoven kept the visitors alive with a six-point effort, pinning Mike Smith 1:10 into the final period, but Norton made quick work of Robert Barber to seal the Cougars’ championship.

Josh Bielemeier provided NR-W’s only other triumph on the mat, pinning 112-pound opponent Steve Rathbone in 2:31.

The Screaming Eagles (1-4) captured four of the seven contested bouts. Bill Lathrop’s 38-second fall at 125 pounds was the quickest of the evening. Heavyweight Aaron Congdon also notched a pin, while 160-pounder Jeremy Denisi helped Midlakes start fast with an 8-6 conquest of Matt LaValley.

Of the 10 head-to-head matchups involving the five Central schools able to field complete lineups, only one was decided by more than nine points.
