Alfred State's VanValen and Thierman Still Alive at NCWA's

George VanValen (Ithaca) and Ryan Thierman (Portville) are still alive after day two of the NCWA Championship at the University of Central Florida. VanValen and Thierman both advanced to the semifinals.

VanValen (174) defeated James Jones (Grays Harbor) 11-8 in the quarterfinals to improve to 3-0 in the tournament and advance to the semis. In the semis he lost a 8-7 decision to Geordan Speiller (Central Florida). Speiller is now 16-0 on the year.

Thierman (125) won a 12-10 decision over Brendan Hazelton (Grand Valley State) in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis. He fell to Brent Newcomer (Emmanuel) in the semis.

VanValen and Thierman will both wrestle in the consolation semifinals on Saturday morning and are guaranteed at least a 6th place finish.

The Pioneers are currently 6th out of 70 teams in the NCWA DII standings. The blue and gold have scored 35.5 points.

The NCWA Championships continue on Saturday at 9 a.m.
