Bulls Nearly Knock Off 7th-Ranked Cornell
November 19, 2016

ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team put a major scare into 7th-ranked Cornell before falling 18-15 in the Bulls first dual meet of the season. The Bulls quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to win at 125, 133 and 141, silencing the Big Red faithful at Newman Arena.

"We came out and wrestled hard," head coach John Stutzman said. "We are still a young team, but we are gaining experience. I'm excited for where we are going. Spilling 5/5 against the 7th ranked team is a testament to these guys."

True freshman Derek Spann, wrestling in his first collegiate dual, started the day off with a 7-4 decision over Noah Baughman at 125.

Bryan Lantry provided the biggest upset of the day by knocking off Mark Grey, ranked 15th in the nation, in a tight 3-2 decision at 133.

Jason Estevez (141) was back in the lineup after missing most of last season with an injury. The redshirt-junior earned a 3-2 decision thanks to riding time points.

After Cornell earned victories at the next five weight classes, James Benjamin got a win for the Bulls at 197 with a 4-3 decision over Ben Honis. Benjamin earned a reversal late in the third period to pull out the win.

Jake Gunning gained the Bulls' final points with a 5-4 decision over Craig Scott.

The Bulls will remain in Ithaca and compete at the New York State Collegiate Championships on Sunday.
