Cornell, Missouri headline the field for the inaugural South Beach Duals
April 12, 2017

Rob Koll and Brian Smith were reminiscing prior to Missouri’s dual meet this season at Cornell. It was mid-January in Ithaca, N.Y., where the average temperature hovers in the low-20s, but their thoughts were 1,350 miles south.

A couple weeks earlier, they were up before daylight on New Year’s morning, getting their wrestlers down to weight for the Southern Scuffle, and the confluence of cold weather and long days at midseason tournaments sparked memories.

Koll and Smith thought back to those times they spent together as colleagues at Cornell, back to the days twentysome years ago when the Big Red would head south for the holiday break and wrestle in Florida.

“We loved it,” Smith said. “We were like, ‘Why doesn’t our sport do that anymore?’ We were sitting there at the dual and (Koll) was like, ‘We should do (a holiday event) down in Fort Lauderdale, where you’re from.’”

This is how the wheels were set in motion for the South Beach Duals.
