SUNY Oswego Assistant Coach Mike Conners to enter NYS Collegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame

Current Oswego State Assistant Wrestling Coach Mike Conners will be inducted into the New York State College Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place Sunday, November 19, 2017 prior to the New York State College Wrestling Championship placement matches at 4:00 pm at Cornell University.

Mike Conners was an exceptionally accomplished athlete during his college career. He compiled an impressive record in both wrestling and football at St. Lawrence University. Mike was a three time NCAA Division III All American on the wrestling mat placing sixth as a sophomore, third his junior year and claiming a national title in 1984. Mike won a New York State Collegiate title in 1983 at heavyweight and was a four-time Conference Champion. A defensive lineman on the football field, Conners was a key member of the defense on the 1982 Lambert Bowl winning team which made the NCAA semifinals and finished the year 10-1. He had 76 total tackles on that team including a sack and was among the tackle leaders as a senior with 71 total stops. Prior to college, Conners was a NY State High School Champion as well as a two time USA Wrestling Freestyle All American.

Upon graduating from SLU, Conners went on to a very successful 25-year coaching career at Fulton High School guiding the Raider wrestling squad to six NY State team titles. Under his guidance his teams at Fulton were ranked in the top ten in New York State for 20 straight seasons. He has over 500 dual meet wins to his credit including 18 Section Three Dual Meet titles. Conners was honored as the NY State High School Coach of the Year in 2008 and was the recipient of the National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1999. Conners joined the Oswego State coaching staff in 2015-2016 season and he has been instrumental in developing a young Laker team.

Coach Conners is a member of the St Lawrence University Hall of Fame, National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Hall of Fame and Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame. Mike is married to Betsy Conners and they have two sons Michael and Tim.
