Salamanca wrestling boosts numbers in 17-18
December 01, 2017

You can tell there’s a difference on the surface immediately upon visiting a practice or dual meet for the Salamanca High School varsity wrestling team.

The Warriors enter the 2017-18 season with a new coach and drastic improvements in numbers from the end of last year’s winless season. Coach Keith Jones said while the team ended last year with just four active wrestlers, he has 19 practicing before the season.

As a new physical education teacher for fourth through seventh grades in the district, Jones started the school year unfamiliar with the athletes he’s coaching. But between modified coach Rich Morton, the school’s athletic director, and new assistant wrestling coach Paul Haley, the head football coach in the fall, Jones had some help recruiting first-year varsity wrestlers.
