Elmira began its campaign by placing second out of 20 teams at the Matthew Marino Tournament at Webster High School. The Express had 10 wrestlers place there, then delivered an impressive 55-17 victory at Corning on Wednesday in its first dual meet.
Those quick starts give reason to think area wrestling fans have a lot to look forward to over the next few months, starting with Saturday's 51st annual Elmira Christmas Tournament at Elmira High School. Although Horseheads will be elsewhere this weekend, the tournament still will feature 12 teams, eight returning sectional champions and two wrestlers who placed at the state tournament.
"It's a great experience," Elmira coach Dave Guyette said. "This is the 51st annual Elmira Christmas Tournament. It's changed throughout the years as far as place and format, but it's always nice to showcase our program and our facility at a great tournament that gets the kids a ton of matches."
