Centorani: State wrestling event debuts in style
January 30, 2018

An unquestioned success was the first New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Championships.

Saturday’s wrestling event was well attended, fans provided an electric setting and Section 4 showed it belonged, which was expected in Division II, but I’ll admit to being surprised that Division I squads Elmira and Horseheads departed Onondaga Community College with 1-1 records. Perhaps that’s a sign Section 4’s Division I wrestlers will have a better showing in a few weeks in Albany.

As I recall, talk of a state dual meet tournament started in the late-1990s. Why it took 20-some years to come to fruition is anyone’s guess, but this will become an annual event. I’m convinced of that.

Every person I talked to Saturday had a favorable opinion.
