Experience clears path to state wrestling championships; Gissendanner first six-time champ

When Wayne lightweight Drew Schafer had a hand raised in victory Saturday night, it should have marked his fourth berth into the high school state wrestling championships.

Schafer earned two third-place finishes at the state championships before his junior year at Palmyra-Macedon. He then got suspended from school after getting in trouble, and his junior year was put on the shelf.

Schafer transferred to Wayne for this senior year.

"I came back from that (misstep) and now I'm looking to win," said Schafer, who didn't elaborate on what led to the suspension. "That drives me a little, the trouble that I got into last year.

"I lost a whole season. It drove me here, today. I was coming back."

Schafer earned another chance to win a state title by defeating Canisteo-Greenwood's Chris Graham, 11-2, in the Super Sectionals Division II 113-pound final.
