Just one West Seneca East grappler joins newly formed district squad
December 05, 2018

West Seneca East's wrestling program is holding on by a thread this winter after just one student from the school answered the call to join the newly formed districtwide wrestling team.

Freshman Kooper Aiken, who will take that mat in the 145-pound weight division, is the last remnant of East's varsity program - for now, at least - after no coaches could be found for this season at the varsity, JV or modified levels, former West head coach and now district team head coach Dave Recor said. Recor was optimistic about the prospects of a combined team with East since West had trouble filling all of the weight classes that compete in dual meet action last season. He noted that some of the potential grapplers from East who could've taken part in the program this season did not come out for reasons that are unknown to him.

Fortunately for Recor, the merger wouldn't have been necessary to load every weight bracket in the lineup this year, as there are nearly two dozen athletes - including Aiken - who are ready and eager to take to the mat for the squad.
