The Buena Regional High School wrestling team returned to the mat Thursday, a week after a video went viral of junior Andrew Johnson getting his dreadlocks cut so he could wrestle in a dual meet.
The haircut, mandated by a referee, sparked outrage and charges of racism from those within and outside the wrestling community, many of whom argued that the haircut stripped Johnson of a part of his black identity.
That outcry continued Wednesday night at an emergency meeting of the Buena Board of Education, where people from around South Jersey condemned the ultimatum of referee Alan Maloney, a ref with a history of racism.
