When greatness is achieved on the basketball court, football field, baseball diamond, ice rink or any other athletic venue there is rarely a need for a sportswriter to dig around to find a captivating story.

Athletes who succeed at the highest levels always tend to have a trail of interesting supporters, individual hardships and family connections following them along to be mined for narrative material.

But, every now and again, there is a champion who carries a fully-formed story along the way to their achievements with no mining necessary.

Just look down at your feet and there it is.
