#23 Brockport Celebrates Three Podium Finishes at New Standard Invite

YORK, PA -- The nationally-ranked No. 23 Brockport wrestling team placed three individuals on the podium and took home sixth place with 64 team points at the New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College on Friday and Saturday. Matt Caccamise was the top finisher for the Golden Eagles as he took home second place (125 lbs), while Richard Knapp added a third place finish (285 lbs), and Joe Yanis placed fifth (184 lbs).

Nationally-ranked sophomore Matt Caccamise fell in a heartbreaker in the championship match of the 125 lb weight class, via decision 12-11, against Samuel Braswell of Averett. Caccamise won his 125 lb quarterfinal matchup by the score of 3-1 against Justin Lopez from Johnson & Wales. He then won a thrilling matchup in the semifinals as he trailed 4-2 in the third period, but pulled an escape, takedown and eventual fall at 5:52 over Colton Messick of the Apprentice School.

Heavyweight Richard Knapp topped Russ Pierce of the Apprentice School via a pin at 5:25 (5-1, Fall) to advance to the semifinals where he would take on Michael DiNardo of Johnson & Wales. Knapp dropped a 5-3 decision against DiNardo and finished the weekend in third place in the 285 lb division after winning his final two matches. He pinned Ben Maack of Ursinus at 4:16 in his final match to secure a third place podium finish. He finished the weekend with a 4-1 record.

Joe Yanis pinned Delaware Valley's Austin Williams in the 184 lb quarterfinals to earn an 11-0 fall victory at 4:30. He then advanced to the semifinals to take on Dan Surich of The College of New Jersey. Yanis' push for a championship ended in the semifinals when he lost a 3-1 decision against The College of New Jersey's Dan Surich. Yanis finished the day in fifth place after a consolation match loss against Anthony Malfitano of Roger Williams.

Elijah Sims dropped a major decision in the quarterfinals against Averett's Brandon Woody, 12-2. Austin Reed also lost in the quarterfinals as he fell to Brett Kaliner of Stevens by way of a technical fall, 23-7.

Wesley Woodworth (149 lb) finished his weekend with a 3-2 record after falling in his first match on Friday and rallying with three straight victories in the consolation bracket. Matthew Kline went 3-2 over the weekend as he posted three straight wins in the consolation bracket after falling the Round of 32 on day one in the 165 lb weight class.

Devon Shader entered the consolation bracket after falling in his first match of the weekend but rallied with two straight wins to finish the weekend with a 2-2 record.

The Golden Eagles return to action at home after the semester break when they host Alfred State and Pitt-Bradford at the Brockport Duals on January 11th. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
