RIT places fifth at 2020 Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships

ONEONTA, NY -- The RIT wrestling team placed fifth out of seven teams at the 2020 Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships from SUNY Oneonta Saturday. The Tigers placed fifth with a team score of 63.5 points. Ithaca College won the team title with a final score of 188 points.

Top-seed Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) won the individual title at 285 lbs. for the Tigers. After a first-round bye, Weinger pinned Sean Dall (SUNY Cortland) at 2:09. In the semifinals, Weinger defeated Jonathan Solorzano (SUNY Oneonta), 2-0. In the title bout, Weinger defeated No. 2 seed Dalton Elias (Ithaca), 10-2 to earn the title.

Nate Osborne (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) placed second at 133 lbs. He began the day pinning Andrew Desousa (SUNY Oneonta) at 1:41. Osborne defeated No. 2 seed Will Hardin II (SUNY Oswego) with an 18-7 major decision in the semifinal, and lost 20-5 to Ithaca's Travis Jones in the title bout.

Other top-five finishers included a third place finish by Ben Dougherty at 174 lbs. Joey Brillo placed fifth at 141 lbs., while Colby Giroux (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield) and Trevor Snow (Dexter, NY/General Brown) placed fourth and fifth, respectively at 184 lbs.

RIT returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 26 at the John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University.
