ONEONTA, NY - The College at Brockport wrestling team placed sixth overall at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Championships hosted by SUNY Oneonta on Saturday. The Golden Eagles registered 62.5 team points and placed five athletes on the podium to cap the afternoon.
Brockport's Elijah Sims placed third in the 141 pound weight class as he posted a 4-1 record on the day. He dropped his first contest of the day, but managed to wrestle his way out of the consolation bracket to earn a spot in the third place match after two pins and a tech. fall. He won the third place matchup by decision over RIT's Shane Murphy (3-1) to take home third place in his weight class.
Matt Kline went 3-1 on the day to earn a third place finish at 165. He won his first match of the day by tech. fall over Alfred State's Loujerry Etienne. He lost in the semifinal via a tight 3-2 decision, but went on to win his next two matches to take home third in the weight class. Kline topped Ithaca's Adam Wagner by way of a 5-2 decision in the third place match.
Sam Grey placed fifth in the 165 pound weight class for Brockport. Grey finished the day with a 3-2 record. He dropped his first match of the day, but rallied with two consecutive victories in the consolation bracket. He fell in the consolation semifinals to teammate Matthew Kline and found himself in the fifth place match against Cortland's Alex Leone. Grey defeated Leone with a 5-2 decision to earn fifth place in his weight class.
Chris Eames earned 12 team points for Brockport after a fifth place finish in the 174 pound weight class. He finished the afternoon with a 3-2 record. Eames earned fifth place at 174 after defeating Alfred State's Blake Ilges by tech. fall (19-4).
Brockport's Justin Jones added 12 team points for Brockport following his fourth place finish in the 197 pound weight class. He went 2-2 on the day. He topped Cortland's Mark Rivera with a 6-2 decision in the consolation semifinals to earn a spot in the third place match. Jones unfortunately lost an 11-5 decision in the third place match to Oneonta's Jhordyn Innocent.
Brockport will travel to Oswego on January 25th to take on Oswego and Castleton University at the Oswego Tri-Match. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
