The Alfred State wrestling team will head to Ithaca College this weekend to compete in the NCAA Mideast Regionals.
First year head coach Justin Signorelli will field a full squad for the competition. Leading the way for the Pioneers are Kyle Fitzgerald (Constableville/South Lewis) and Anthony Miraglia (Byron Bergen).
Fitzgerald will compete in the heavyweight bracket after finishing the regular season with a 17-6 overall record. Earlier in the season he finished 3rd at the Brockport Open and 3rd at the ECWC Championships
Miraglia will enter the 149 lb. weight class. He is 20-15 on the season and 12-6 while wrestling at 149. He wrestled to a 4th place finish at the Brockport Open, a 5th place finish at the ECWC Championships, and a 6th place finish at Baldwin Wallace.
Signorell is excited for this weekend. "We have made tremendous progress individually and as a program all season long. I am excited for my guys to have this opportunity to compete at the NCAA Regional Championships and to represent themselves, the Alfred State wrestling program and to display just how far we have come in the past year."
The regionals will feature 19 teams and the top three in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships that will take place March 13-14 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, IA. Opening action begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, championship quarterfinals and wrestle-back Round 2 are scheduled to start at approximately 2:15 p.m., and wrestle-back round 3 should start around 4:15 p.m. On Sunday, the championship semifinals and wrestle-back round 4 begins at 10 a.m., the wrestle-back semifinals begin at Noon, and the championship, third-place, and fifth place bouts will be at 1:30 p.m.
