Five from RIT wrestling earn 2019-20 NWCA All-America honors

ROCHESTER, NY -- Five members of the RIT wrestling team were named 2019-20 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-America. Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and Kaidon Winters were first team selections, and Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) was a second team selection. Chris Horton (Athens, PA/Athens Area) and John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) were third team selections.

King, the 2020 ECWC Wrestler of the Year, qualified as the No. 6 seed at 165 lbs. at the NCAA Division III Championship, qualifying for the third straight season. King, who was the national runner-up at 165 lbs. in 2019, won the title at the NCAA Mideast Regional. King, who earned the Tony Wallace Award as Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2019 RIT Invitational, finished his brilliant career with a 108-24 career record, including a 30-1 record this season with 14 wins coming via pin.

Winters qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championship for the third straight year after winning his weight class at the NCAA Mideast Regional for the second straight season. He finished the 2019-20 season with a 34-4 record with 18 wins coming via pin. He won individual titles at the Ithaca Invitational, RIT Invitational and Citrus Open. has a 111-16 career record.

Weinger qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championship for the second time, competing at the 2017 championship. Weinger qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championship with a third place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship, beating Trentyn Rupert of SUNY Cortland, 6-1 in the third-place match. Weinger finished the season 16-1, including seven wins via pin, and finished with a 105-46 career record.

Donohue earned a spot at the 2020 NCAA Championship with a third place finish at 197 lbs. at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Donohue finished. 2019-20 with a 16-9 record, including five wins coming via pin.

Horton qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championship with a third place finish at 133 lbs. at the Mideast Regional Championship, defeating Andrew Cota of Hunter College, 12-0 in the third-place match. Horton finished the season with a 24-10 record, including five wins coming via pin. He is 49-18 in his two seasons at the university.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association, established in 1928, is a non-profit organization for the advancement of all levels of the sport of wrestling with primary emphasis on developing coaches who work in academic environments. The three core competencies of the NWCA are: Coaching Development, Student-Athlete Welfare, and the Promotion of Wrestling.
