Brockport places third at New York State Wrestling Championships

BROCKPORT PLACES THIRD AT NEW YORK STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Weidler wins 165 weight championship

GARDEN CITY, N.Y.-- After the second and final day of the 2004 New York State Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships at Nassau Community College Friday, SUNY Brockport finished in third place out of 19 teams.

The Golden Eagles, ranked #6 in the nation in Division III, finished with 124.50 points and led all Division III teams. Army was first with 178.50 points and the University of Buffalo was second with 135.50. Nassau Community College had 121.00 points.. Brockport had nine of 10 wrestlers competing in Day 2 of the State Championships.

In the 165 weight class, Artie Weidler (Patchogue/Patchogue), the top ranked wrestler in Division III, won the division. He won by fall at 2:52 over Sam Thorner of New York University. Weidler faced Cornell's Dan Miracola in the next round in which he won 8-5 and went on to win the semi-finals against Marc Israel of Ithaca. Weidler won the title with a 3-1 triumph over Carlos Patrick of Nassau.

At 133, Tony D'Ambra (Caledonia) won 18-2 over Alfred State's Kyle Youngs, went on to defeat Cliff Smith of Buffalo 9-4 and lost in the semi-finals to Bernard Gardner 7-4 in Day 2. In the consolation round, D'Ambra finished in third after defeating Smith 6-2.

Dan Roberts (Bellport/Bellport) was a 12-2 winner in 141 over Jeff Erickson of Tomkins Community College. Roberts advanced to wrestle agasint Leshaunne Lewis of Nassau. Roberts defeated Lewis 16-4 and then lost in the semi-finals to Justin Lijo, 2-1.

Romaine Malcolm (Amityville/Amityville) lost to Ithaca's K.C. Beach, 4-3 at 157, but defeated Danridge Giltz of the Merchant Marine Academy, 11-2 in the consolations. Malcolm finished in fifth place after defeating Paul Clarke of Niagara Community College.

At 184, Rich D'Amico (LIverpool/Cicero North Syracuse) received a bye and lost to Ithaca's Robert Stubbs, 14-10. D'Amico faced Stubbs again in the consolation round in which he was victorious, 10-6, and finished in third place.

Rob Cuffie (Bay Shore/Brentwood), who moved into the top ranking nationally at 197, finished second. He defeated Peter Kaskella of Oswego, 28-13 and faced Bryan Petti of Ithaca. Cuffie defeated Petti 12-4, and also is a winner in the semi-finals after defeating Chris Weidman of Nassau, 8-3. Cuffie lost to Kyle Cerminera of Buffalo in the finals, 3-2.

In the heavyweight class, Arnold Frost (Ithaca) won over Jimmie Byrd of Niagara by fall at 1:48. He then lost to Jim Marsh of Cornell 6-4 and finished the day in seventh place after defeating Billy Cooper of Oneonta.

Action continues throughout Saturday for the final winners to be announced. After Saturday, the Golden Eagles will be idle until Wed., February 4 when they host RIT for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
