Oswego State wrestling team to send two to NCAA Division III Championships

Oswego, NY: A pair of Oswego State wrestlers earned a trip to the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships by placing second at Saturday's Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships hosted at RIT.

As a team, the Lakers finished in fourth place with 57 points. Brockport claimed the top spot with 105 points.

Both juniors Tenkoran Agyeman (Bronx/Truman) and Frank Petrucci (Suffern/Don Bosco) will head to national tournament as "wild card" selections. The event will be hosted by Loras College and is set for March 5th and 6th in Dubuque, Iowa.

Agyeman, a 2003 All-American, placed second at 133 pounds falling to Brockport's Tony D'Ambra in the finals by the score of 16-9. Agyeman bounced right back to win the true second-place match as he pinned Ithaca's Lance Dolson in 5:00. The Laker junior started the day with a 16-5 decision over Cortland's Eddie Ortiz. Agyeman heads the championships with a 33-1 record on the season.
Petrucci was also second competing at 165 pounds. The 2002 All-American opened the conference tournament with a pin of RIT's Sean Dust in 4:21. The Laker then knocked off second-seeded Marc Israel of Ithaca College by the score of 4-3. In the finals, Petrucci lost a 5-2 hard-fought battle with Brockport's Artie Weidler, who is the top ranked wrestler in the nation at 165. Petrucci is now 24-6 on the year.

John Spinner (Malone/Franklin Academy) had solid tournament for Oswego State at 125 pounds placing third after compiling a record of 3-2. After falling in the semifinals, the sophomore battle back to beat third-seeded Sal Cruz of Brockport in a true second match.
Clayton Walsh (Vernon/VVS) claimed third at 141 pounds, as the freshman was 2-1 in the tournament.

Dane LaPlante (Carthage/Beaver River) was third at 149 advancing to the true second match. With the two wins in the tournament gave him 22 victories.

Heavyweight Jeremy Calkins (Schuyler Falls/Peru) was the third Oswego State grappler to place third as he advanced to the semifinals.

Jonathan Jagatnarian (Bronx/Truman) added to the solid team finish by taking fourth at 184 pounds.
