SIX WRESTLERS COMPETE AT NCAAs
Golden Eagles will return home with four All-Americans

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Six wrestlers from the SUNY Brockport wrestling team competed in the NCAAs this weekend in St. Olaf, Minnesota. The team went into the championships ranked 11th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (February 23) and two of its six competitors were nationally ranked. Brockport will return home with four All-Americans, making Brockport's total 131. The Golden Eagles finished in fifth place with 48.5 points.

Sophomore Tony D'Ambra (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) entered the championship seeded seventh and received a bye for the first round. He defeated Tim Bohlman of York, 7-2, and defeated Sean Cullen of Lycoming, 5-2 in the semifinals en route to being named an All-American. D'Ambra lost to #1 seed Matt Maztek of Augsburg, 4-1 in the finals to claim the runner up spot.

Freshman Shaheim Bradshaw (Huntington/Huntington) was chosen as a wildcard selection at 157. Bradshaw defeated Steve Martell of Johnson and Wales by a fall at 5:22. He then lost, 10-9, to Rick Larnes of Elmhurst College, but came back to defeat Danny Irwin of Manchester in the consolations, 9-3. His victory earned him All-American honors. Bradshaw lost to Carl Amerine of Wilmington by a fall at 2:18, but defeated Rick Lamas of Elmhurst for a fifth place finish.

Willie Weiss (Oxford/Oxford) automatically advanced to the NCAAs at 197 with a career record of 27-4. Weiss is nationally ranked at sixth, is seeded fourth, and received a bye in the first round. Weiss defeated Jim Swanson of University of Wisconsin La-Crosse, 5-4, to earn All-American honors. He then fell to #1 seed Akeem Carter of Wartburg, 7-4 in the semifinals. Weiss defeated #5 seed Justin Sorenseen of Augsburg in the consolations, 7-5 and went on to defeat Matt Loesch of Muhlenberg for a third place finish.

Pat Bennett (Syracuse/Marcellos) automatically advanced to the NCAAs at HWT, entered with a career record of 25-6 and is seeded eighth. Bennett defeated Andrew Reinecker of McDaniel, 9-4, and then lost to Ryan Allen of University of Wisconsin La-Crosse, 14-5. Bennett defeated Sean Barnes of University of Chicago, 7-4 in the consolations, earning him All-American honors. Bennett lost to Mike Blair of Trinity, 6-5 and was defeated for the seventh place position by Tommy Snyder of Lycoming.

Four time national qualifier Dan Roberts (Bellport/Bellport) entered the 2005 championships with a 23-2 season record and ranked fourth nationally. Roberts was seeded fifth going into the championship. After receiving a bye in the first round, Roberts lost to Dustin Brewer of Simpson, 12-5 and went on to defeat Adam Kravitz of MacMurray by a fall in the consolations. He then fell to #7 seed, Nick Karls of University of Wisconsin Whitewater, 13-8. Roberts ended his Brockport career with an 87-26 career record.

Senior Pat Hanscomb (Hilton High School/Hilton) was chosen as a wildcard selection at 149. After receiving a bye for the first round, Hanscomb lost to Rick Frondorf of Delaware Valley, 5-2, and then defeated Mark Zimmerman of Heidelberg in the consolations, 2-1, but then lost by a fall at 1:29 to Mike Kemble of Thiel. Hanscomb ends his Brockport season with a 20-12 record.
