Cortland Loses 22-12 at Brockport in Battle of Ranked Teams

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Brockport, ranked fourth nationally in Division III, won the final two matches of the evening to break a 12-12 tie and defeat 13th-ranked Cortland, 22-12, in the dual match opener for both schools.

Don Ooton broke the tie with a pin at 149 pounds and nationally second-ranked Shaheim Bradshaw
posted a 20-6 major decision at 157 pounds to seal the win.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead with decisions by Don Williams at 165 pounds and Eric Van Patten at 174 pounds. Cortland bounced back with two straight wins to tie the match at 6-6. Junior Mario Schiano (Rochester/Gates-Chili) won 5-4 at 184 pounds and sophomore Phil Archer (Shirley/William Floyd) upset nationally top-ranked Willie Weiss, 3-2, at 197 pounds.

Brockport answered with a major decision by nationally seventh-ranked Pat Bennett at heavyweight to take a 10-6 lead, but Cortland responded with a 6-5 victory by sophomore Ryan Gadsby (Auburn) at 125 pounds. Brockport had a team point deducted for unsportsmanlike behavior after the 125-pound match and the teams were tied at 9-9.

The hosts gained a 12-9 lead when Tony D'Ambra, the top ranked wrestler nationally at 133 pounds, earned an 11-5 win. Cortland freshman Paul LeBlanc (Morrisville/Morrisville-Eaton), ranked eighth at 141 pounds, won his match, 10-3, to create the final tie at 12-12. LeBlanc is 18-1 this season.

Cortland will host RIT in a dual match Saturday at noon.
