OKLAHOMA TAKES WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Golden Eagles Take 7th in Wrestling Classic

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Oklahoma scored 178.5 points to win the 2003 SUNY Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Showcase Wrestling Classic Saturday.

The Sooners had two first place winners, while Ohio State had four individual champions and scored 143 points. Army took third with one champion and 121 points, while Cleveland State (111.5) finished fourth with one individual champion. Rounding out the Division I laden field were Buffalo in fifth (102.5 with a champion), Rutgers in sixth (96.5), host SUNY Brockport in seventh (84.5), Bloomsburg in eighth (81) and Wagner in ninth (2). Brockport was the only non-Division I school competing in this year's event.

SUNY Brockport was led by two seniors who reached the Championship Finals in their weight classes. Artie Wiedler (Patchogue) lost to John Clark of Ohio State, 10-5 in the finals of the 165 class. In the 197 weight class, Rob Cuffie (Bay Shore/Brentwood) lost a 2-1 overtime Championship Final to the University of Buffalo's Kyle Cerminara.

Oklahoma was led by Sam Hazewinkel, a 3-2 winner over teammate Mimi Miller (Ponca City, OK), 3-2 in the 125 weight class. Brandon Hardy (Reston, VA) was a 5-2 victor over Army's Bernard Gardner (Kinnear, WY/Wind River) in the 133 class.

In the 141 class, Cleveland's Anthony Coleman (Bellevue, OH/Bellevue) was the champion, defeating Bloomsburg's Scott Heckman (Bangor, PA/Bangor), 6-2. Ohio State's Jeff Ratliff (Marion, OH/Marion) won 9-2 over Cleveland State's Matt DePolo (Bellevue, OH/Bellevue) in the Finals at 149. Army's Phillip Simpson (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) won the 157 class with an 11-3 decision over Oklahoma's Rafael Maturino (Broken Arrow).

Andy Roy (Wall, NJ/Wall) was a 3-2 victor over Oklahoma's E.K. Waldhaus (Pueblo, CO) in the 174 weight class. Ohio State's Blake Kaplan (Cincinnati) won 8-1 over Army's Luke Calvert (Broken Arrow, OK/Broken Arrow) in the 184 weight class. Ohio State's Tommy Rowlands (Hilliard, OH) downed Oklahoma's Leonce Crump (Baton Rouge, LA), 3-2 in the heavyweight class.
