Brockport Wrestling Takes Third at Conference Tournament

Tyler Marlow and Paul Glover qualify for NCAA Championships

Sophomore Tyler Marlow (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) finished second overall at 125 pounds and junior Paul Glover (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) took second at 197 pounds as The College at Brockport Wrestling team captured third place at the 21st Annual Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Tournament Saturday afternoon in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium in Brockport.

Despite the second-place finishes, both Marlow and Glover were selected as two of the six wild-card spots for the NCAA Championships set for March 9-10 at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Marlow, the second seed in the 125-pound bracket pinned his first opponent in 51 seconds and then posted a 7-6 decision in the semifinals with a reversal and two takedowns in the final period. Glover, the No. 3 seed, won a pair of decisions with a 9-3 victory and a 7-4 win to move into the championship bout.

The Golden Eagles placed third in the team standings with 105.5 points. Cortland won the team title coming from behind to beat Ithaca with 128.5 points, The Bombers finished with 127 points. Messiah (97 points) was fourth followed by Oneonta (81.5), Lycoming (56.5), Oswego (36) and RIT (30.5).

Ithaca held a slim three-point lead going into the four true second place bouts but Cortland scored three victories earning a point for each as well an extra point for the major decision to score the team championship.

Other top finishers for Brockport included sophomore Robert Troy (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman), senior Justin James (Spencerport, NY/Brockport) and sophomore John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) who all finished in third place. Troy scored two pins at 149 pounds, James finished second in the bracket but dropped an overtime decision in the true second place bout and Wilkinson had a pair of 13-4 decisions before a double overtime loss in the championship bout and a 3-2 loss in the true second place match.

Clayton Neivert (Ossining, NY/Ossining) captured fifth place for the Golden Eagles at 174 pounds. After a first-round loss, Neivert battled back with two pins in the consolation bracket to finish fifth.
