Wilkinson Leads Brockoprt at NYS Championships

John Wilkinson finished in fifth place in the heavyweight division

Junior John Wilkinson (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) won twice in the championship bracket and then captured the 5th-place match to lead The College at Brockport Wrestling team to a 14th place finish at the New York State Championship Tournament Saturday at Cornell University in Ithaca.

Cornell won the team title with 183.5 points followed by Columbia (152.5), Hofstra (135.5), Buffalo (130.5), Army (125.5), Cortland (113.5), Binghamton (84.5), Ithaca (56), Oneonta (47/5), RIT (44), Niagara (38.5), NYU (32), Oswego (28.5) and Brockport (26). Finishing behind the Golden Eagles were Hunter (17.5), Jamestown CC (12), Mount Saint Vincent (4), Alfred State (2) and USMMA (2).

Wilkinson defeated Cortland's Corey James in his first bout in the 285-pound bracket with a close 2-1 victory. He then topped Hunter's Leon Bodden with a 4-2 overtime decision before falling to top-seeded Paul Snyder from Hofstra. In the consolation bracket, Wilkinson faced James again but this time dropped a tight 2-1 match to fall into the fifth-place bout against Stephen Snyder from Army. Against Snyder, Wilkinson won a 5-1 decision.

Freshman Jordan Dyer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) continued to impress early in his career with a seventh place finish at 141 pounds. Dyer scored a fall in 5:47 to start the tournament over a wrestler from Mount Saint Vincent before dropping a 10-2 decision to the second seeded wrestler from Hofstra. In the consolation bracket, Dyer defeated teammate Eliah Golding (Albany, NY/Colonie) by a 3-2 score before losing to another Division I wrestler to fall into the seventh-place bout against Tyler Pendergast from Binghamton. Against Pendergast, Dyer lost an overtime decision by 6-4 score.

Golding recorded a fall in 6:13 in a consolation bracket bout against NYU's Darryl Albonico, Clay Neivert (Ossining, NY/Ossining) pinned Oswego's Scott Bova in a consolation bout and Cole Tristram (Newton Falls, NY/Clifton-Fine) won his opener with a 5-1 decision over Alfred State's Daniel Ognibene before an injury prevented him from continuing in the tournament.

Brockport continues at the New York State Championship Tournament with the B-Division brackets Sunday starting at 9 am at Cornell.
