Cornell Wrestlers Face New Set of Challengers on Friday

ITHACA, N.Y. – Members of the Cornell wrestling program past and present are set to compete against wrestlers from a variety of regional training centers on Friday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. EST. Kyle Dake '13, Gabe Dean '17, Yianni Diakomihalis and Vito Arujau will headline the main card for Cornell with matches against some of the top wrestlers in the country.

57kg - #6 Vito Arujau vs. Michael Colaiocco
65kg - #2 Yianni Diakomihalis vs. #8 Anthony Ashnault
74kg - #2 Kyle Dake vs. David McFadden
97kg – #6 Gabe Dean* vs. #3 Mike Macchiavello

Friday's main card will include top tier freestyle wrestling matches featuring four of the best wrestlers to ever put on the Cornell singlet.

After an impressive run at the RTC Cup in December, Vito Arujau will meet Penn's Michael Colaiocco at 57kg to start the night. Another standout from the RTC Cup following a pair of wins over James Green, Yianni Diakomihalis will look to keep his run of strong performances going against 2020 Pan-American champion Anthony Ashnault at 65kg. Two-time world champion Kyle Dake '13 is back on the mat competing for the first time since defeating Frank Chamizo in 2020. McFadden recently won the 79kg U23 national title in November. Gabe Dean '17 will bump up to 97kg to face Mike Macchiavello after returning to the mat at 86kg in October.

Dake, Diakomihalis and Arujau will use this event as preparation for the 2021 Henri Deglane Grand Prix, which is set for January 15-17 in Nice, France.

UNDERCARD

65kg - Josh Saunders vs. Anthony Artalona

Only one undercard match has been confirmed and will feature Josh Saunders facing off against Penn's Anthony Artalona, the 2019 EIWA champion at 149 pounds. Other undercard matches are expected to be announced prior to the event.
