Binghamton drops close match with Lehigh 19-16
January 30, 2021

The Binghamton University wrestling team won five of ten bouts at Lehigh Saturday afternoon, but fell by a score of 19-16 to the Mountain Hawks. The Bearcats were led by Lou DePrez, who registered a major decision and nearly had a pin in the late stages of the match.

"I'm proud of the way some of our guys wrestled, especially our freshmen," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "Micah and Brevin are continuing to do great things in the starting lineup. Ivan Garcia got his first college match today in extra bouts and won by fall. Matt Kelly got his second match of the season and dominated. I saw some great things out of Michael Zarif, Jacob Nolan, and (Lou) Deprez as well. I'm disappointed in a few other matches and we need to wrestle better as a team moving forward to come out with a W."

Roes kicked things off at 125 pounds, and took control right away. The true freshman attacked early and often, and earned the 8-2 decision. Roes is now 4-0 on the season.

Following losses at 133 and 141 pounds, Zarif was able to steer the Bearcats on track with a 3-1 sudden victory. Zarif was the aggressor for the majority of his bout, and was able to put away a shot in overtime.

At 165 pounds, Cassella became the second Bearcat true freshman to reach the 4-0 mark after a momentous second period. Trailing 3-2, he was able to obtain six back points in the period to take an 8-3 advantage. He eventually took the 10-6 decision to tie the match at nine.

Nolan won his fourth straight bout to vault the Bearcats into the lead. After a scoreless first period, he rode out Lehigh's Connor Herceg in the second and earned a stall point. A big takedown in the third gave him some breathing room en route to a 5-1 decision.

At 184 pounds, No. 4 DePrez made it three straight wins for the Bearcats. After a near fall in the second, DePrez would add a few takedowns for a 13-1 major decision.

Lehigh earned a major decision and a pin in the final two bouts to get the win.

Binghamton's Ivan Garcia earned a pin in his first career match and Matt Kelly won his matchup as the Bearcats swept the extra matches.

BU will head to Bucknell on Sunday, February 7 for an afternoon dual. Bout begins at 2 p.m.
