ST. LOUIS, MO - Despite strong efforts on the mat, both Michael Petite and Sam Schuyler were eliminated from the NCAA Championships following their first matches on Friday.

Petite battled, but fell just short against #17 Requir van der Merwe of Stanford. Petite gave up two takedowns in the first period, but was able to get the escapes to only trail 4-2 after the first. After getting an escape early in the second, Petite was able to cut the lead to 4-3 after the second. A second stall call by van der Merwe at the start of the third tied the match up, 4-4. However, van der Merwe was able to earn the escape early in the third and then got a takedown with just under a minute left to hold off Petite for the 8-4 victory.

Schuyler also lost a hard-fought contest to eighth-seeded Jordan Wood. After a scoreless first period, Wood earned an escape to take a 1-0 lead after the second. With Schuyler on the bottom, he was unable to get an escape of his own and in the closing seconds, Wood was able to get back points to earn the 6-0 decision.

"We wrestled hard today," head coach John Stutzman said. "I'm really proud of our guys' efforts. With three national qualifiers back next year and the experience that our freshmen gained this year, the future is bright for Buffalo wrestling."
