Jayhawks Post Three First-Place Finishers at Districts

JAMESTOWN - It was a untraditional NJCAA Eastern A District Championships Thursday evening at the Physical Education Complex with just the Jamestown Community College wrestling team competing against Niagara County Community College.

The Thunderwolves took home to the team title finishing with 34 team points while the Jayhawks finished with 15 team points.

Prior to tonight's events, head coach Keith Maute and assistant coach Eric Knuutila from Niagara County Community College, along with head coach Kris Schimek from Jamestown Community College, presented former Mercyhurst North East head coach Aaron Cooper with a plaque as he was inducted into the Region 3 Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The Jayhawks fell in the whole early with NCCC taking an early 9-0 lead. Trenton Donahue (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area HS), wrestling in the 141 pound weight class, came away with a 10-2 major decision over Cole French. Donahue went on the offensive early and often, controlling the match from start to finish.

The Thunderwolves continue to add on team points, winn the next three matches to take a 22-4 lead after six bouts.

Ross Abram (Eden, NY/Eden Central) picked up where he left off, getting a 24-9 technical fall over Jacob Mancuso. Abram had control of the match from the first whistle and never looked back.

In the heavyweight bout, Alex Christy (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia HS) moved up a weight class and squared off against Maurice Jackson. The wrestlers went tic-for-tac in the first two periods with the two deadlocked at 12-12. In the third period, Christy started on bottom and hit a reversal, catching Jackson to get the fall at the 5:20 mark.

Donahue, Abram, and Christy all received automatic bids to the 2021 NJCAA Wrestling Championships on April 21st at the Mid-America Center held in Council Bluffs, Iowa. At-large berth are yet to be determined.

After the match, Donahue and Joshua Thibeault of NCCC were named Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler for Region 3. On the year, Donahue posted a perfect 10-0 record where he collected three falls, two tech. falls, and two major decision victories.
