November 20, 2021

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Kaidon Winters, and juniors Austin Lamb and Colby Giroux finished first in their respective weight classes to lead RIT to a first-place finish at the NYS Collegiate Championship, Saturday.

The Tigers placed a dozen wrestlers on the day while accumulating 148.5 team points that were 22 more than the next closest team from a field of 11. Of the nine RIT wrestlers that finished in the top-four of their brackets, four advanced to championship matches.

"Our team competed very hard today. To a man, I couldn't be more pleased with their effort and grit. That being said, we know we still have a lot of work to do to be ready for the push at the end of the year to be at our best for the national tournament because ultimately, that's how great teams are measured," head coach Jason Bovenzi said.

Winters went 4-0 on the day with four pins and took the 157-pound title over Chandler Merwin (Cortland State) in 6:10. His semifinal win over Wenchard Pierre-Louis (Ithaca) lasted 5:18 after a quarterfinal win over Max Yahre (Brockport) in 2:42. Winters won his opening match against Adrian Rosario-Beato (Ithaca) in 2:15.

Lamb took the 165-title by medical forfeit over Jackson Gray (Ithaca). Prior to that, the junior defeated top-seed Tyler Brazinski (Oneonta State) by a 6-2 score in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Lamb needed 33 seconds to pin Steven Gazzillo (Cortland State), which was three seconds less than his opening-round pin of Ben Trautwein (Alfred State).

Giroux won the 184-pound title after second-seed Christophe Eames of Brockport had to retire due to injury, 3:07 into the bout. In the semifinals, Giroux took a 13-6 win over William Sims (Merchant Marine), after a 5-1 win over Logan Green (Merchant Marine) in the quarterfinals. Giroux opened with a 15-0 technical fall over Daryl Harris (Brockport).

Junior Calik Kennedy also reached the finals in the 285-pound title, but fell 8-4 to RIchard Knapp of Brockport. Kennedy reached the finals with an 11-2 major decision over second-seed Jake Pine (Oneonta State) in the semifinals. Kennedy took his quarterfinal match with a 1:45 pin over Jaden Hall (Oswego State), before starting the day with a 8-1 win over Nicolas Galka (Ithaca).

Freshman Lee Rubin (125 pounds) took third place after falling 9-6 to eventual champion and top-seed Cody Merwin (Cortland State). Prior to that, Rubin took a 19-4 technical fall over Tyler Farley (Oneonta State) in the quarterfinals after starting with a fall in 4:13 over Mason Cardinale (Elmira College).

Junior James Ost (165 pounds) also finished third after dropping a 10-5 decision to Michael Emerick (Merchant Marine). Prior to that, Ost took a 6-5 win over Sean Malenfant (Alfred State).

Sophomore Michael Glynn III (149 pounds) and freshmen Robert Horan (125 pounds) and Josh Harkless (197 pounds) registered fourth-place finishes.

Sophomore Josh Post (133 pounds) and freshman Aiden Prunoske (125 pounds) each finished fifth in their brackets, while freshman Dara Heydarpour placed sixth at 157 pounds.
