VESTAL, NY - Coming off three straight duals against nationally ranked opponents to start the season, the University at Buffalo wrestling team earned their first win of the year with a hard-fought 17-16 victory on the road at Binghamton on Sunday.

UB got off to a good start as Tristan Daugherty earned a 9-5 decision over Micah Roes at 125. Derek Spann followed with his best performance of the season, a 19-1 technical fall over Christian Gannone to give the Bulls an 8-0 lead. Spann's bonus points proved to be the difference in the dual.

After losing a close match at 141, John Arceri got the Bulls back on the board with a 3-1 decision over Nick Lombard. With the match tied, 1-1, after regulation, Arceri got the takedown in overtime for the sudden victory.

Ty Raines followed with a workmanlike 4-0 decision over Logan Gumble to extend the UB lead to 14-3.

After Binghamton won the next two matches to cut the UB advantage to 14-10, Pete Acciardi came up with one of the biggest performances of the night. The redshirt-junior got a takedown with just 11 seconds left in the third period to earn a 3-1 decision over Sam DePrez and extend the UB lead to 17-10.

Sam Mitchell (197) and Toby Cahill (285) both went up against nationally ranked opponents. And though they both dropped decisions, both wrestled hard and didn't allow either wrestler to earn bonus points which would have let the Bearcats escape with the victory.

"What a team effort in a hostile environment," head coach John Stutzman said. "We came to wrestle. There's a lot of history there and I'm happy we came out on top. That's a really good team we beat."

The Bulls are back in action on Friday will duals at Edinboro and against Gannon.
