Brockport Dominates at Thunderwolves Open

The SUNY Brockport wrestling team dominated the Thunderwolves Open at Niagara County Community College, posting 149.5 points on its way to a first place finish out of seven teams. Nick Franco won all three of his matches to earn the 197-pound title for the Golden Eagles. He pinned his first two competitors and then won an 8-6 decision over Camden's Shane Whitney in the third-place matchup.

Isaiah Jackson placed second in the 125-pound weight class and totaled 14 team points for Brockport. He defeated Brandan Myers in just 37 seconds in the semifinal but was pinned by Nathan Pelesky in 4:39 in the first-place match.

Brockport's Joe Yanis posted a second-place finish in the heavyweight division as he went 2-1 on the day in his first meet of the season. He pinned Nasiir Duncan in two minutes in the opener and then topped Alex Christy by the score of 3-0 in the semifinals. He lost a 13-7 decision against unattached Daishi Christy in the first-place match.

Matthew Cestare placed third in the 149-pound weight class after going 2-1 on the day. He lost in his first match of the day, but responded with two straight wins, including a major decision (13-5) victory over teammate Mahmoud Esa in the third place match.

Sam Grey placed second in the 157 pound weight class for the Golden Eagles. He won a sudden victory 11-9 in the quarterfinal and then pinned teammate Michael Fronczak in just 31 seconds in the semifinal. Grey lost to Garret's Noah Korenoski in sudden victory, 3-1, to earn second place and 14 points for Brockport.

Holt Reed placed third and posted 11 team points in the 157-pound weight class for Brockport. He lost his first match of the day but crawled out of the consolation bracket and defeated James Rankin by way of a 2-0 decision to earn third place for Brockport.

Anthony Oca placed third in the heavyweight division for Brockport. He went 2-1 on the day and his two victories came by way of fall. He topped Nasiir Duncan in just 1:40, before defeating Maurice Jackson at the 5-minute marker of the third-place match.

Michael Sullivan went 2-1 for the Golden Eagles on the weekend and placed third in the 174-weight class. He lost his first match of the day before rattling off two straight victories, including an 18-0 tech fall victory over Joseph Teguia in the third-place match.

Brockport returns to the mat on January 8th when the Golden Eagles host Niagara County Community College and New Jersey City University for a tri-match at 1 p.m.
