NCCC grapplers win 26th regional title

Niagara County Community College had the Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler, four individual champions and eight national qualifiers on its way to a 26th Region III team championship this past Saturday at Jamestown Community College.

The event doubled as the NJCAA Northeast District Championships with the Thunderwolves finishing in first place with 102 points. The host Jayhawks were second with 79 and Nassau Community College was third with 68.

NCCC sophomore Frankie Gissendaner continued his unbeaten season with a pin of Joey Pilliteri (Jamestown CC) in the title match at 141 pounds. Gissendaner, who is now 13-0 on the year, was honored as Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler along with Ross Abram of Jamestown CC.

Freshman Anthony Kuhn won the 125-pound weight class with a pair on pinfalls. He pinned rival DeAonte Hutchinson of Jamestown CC in the semifinals and then made quick work of Nassau CC's Kevin Lopez in the championship bout.

Also for N-Trip, freshman Cole French took first place in the 133-pound bracket with a 4-2 decision over Brendan Ramsey of Jamestown CC and classmate Justin McDougald was crowned the 165-pound champion after his opponent - Adam Basiello of Nassau CC - was disqualified for a head butt.

Runner-up finishers from NCCC included: freshman Nik Voelker (149), sophomore David Crow (157), freshman Warren McDougald (174), freshman Matt Ash (184) and freshman Ameer Ladd (285).

The four champions along with Voelker, Crow, McDougald and Ladd will advance to the NJCAA Championships, which are set for March 4-5 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
