Cornell's Grey & Diakomihalis, Penn's Composto Collect Major Awards, Academic All-Ivy Wrestling Announced
March 02, 2022

PRINCETON, N.J. -- After an impressive season that saw a number of nationally-ranked programs and individuals across the league, the 2021-22 Ivy League All-Ivy and major awards were announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Cornell's Yianni Diakomihalis has been named Wrestler of the Year and Penn sophomore CJ Composto has been selected as Rookie of the Year. Diakomihalis is joined by Big Red head coach Mike Grey who is honored as Coach of the Year.

Diakomihalis is the 20th member of the Big Red to receive this award since its inception in 1984. He is the only Ivy League wrestler to be named Wrestler of the Year three time in his career. The junior has only suffered one loss thus far in his collegiate career. He is seeded as No. 1 heading into this weekend's EIWA Championship. Diakomihalis is a two-time NCAA National champion and was the second rookie in Cornell history to secure a national title. He also received unanimous first-team All-Ivy honors at 149.

Composto is the seventh Penn wrestler to be named Rookie of the Year. The last Quaker to receive this honor was Lorenzo Thomas in 2012. Composto was also unanimously selected to the first team at 141, including a perfect 5-0 against Ivy League opponents.

Grey garners Coach of the Year honors in his first season at the helm of the Big Red program. Grey led Cornell to their 41st overall title after taking the trophy back from Princeton. Cornell has been consistently ranked at the top of the nation in the coaches' polls throughout the season, this week coming in at No. 10.

Additionally, one Ivy wrestler from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the mat as members of the 2021-22 Ivy League Wrestling Academic All-Ivy team. Brown's Cade Wilson, Columbia's Joe Franzese, Cornell's Hunter Richard, Harvard's Philip Conigliaro, Penn's CJ Composto and Princeton's Quincy Monday were each named to the team.
