DETROIT, Mich. -- The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced Saturday (March 19) that University of Michigan head wrestling coach Sean Bormet has been named the organization's 2021-22 National Coach of the Year. Bormet becomes the first Michigan head coach to win the award.

Bormet has guided the Wolverines to a runner-up finish at the 2022 NCAA Championships -- already clinched entering tonight's final session -- with two finalists and six total All-Americans. It is Michigan's highest NCAA finish since placing second in 2005 and ties the program's best finish; U-M also took second in 1928, 1929, 1967 and 1974.

Michigan's six All-Americans this season also tie a program record, matching its 1965 total. Graduate students Nick Suriano and Myles Amine will compete in tonight's NCAA finals at 125 and 184 pounds, respectively, while junior/sophomore Cameron Amine took fourth at 165 pounds and senior/junior Will Lewan (157), graduate student Logan Massa (174) and senior Mason Parris (heavyweight) all placed fifth in this morning's medal round.

Bormet was also named the 2022 Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year after leading U-M to the program's first Big Ten championship since 1973 behind individual champions Suriano and Myles Amine, 10 total placewinners and a program-record 143 points. Bormet joined his own collegiate coach, Dale Bahr (1988), as just the second U-M coach to earn the conference's coaching award.

Michigan went 12-1 in duals this season and posted a 7-1 Big Ten record to finish tied for second in the conference standings. The Wolverines earned seven ranked wins, including top-10 decisions over No. 7 Ohio State (29-8, Jan. 24) and No. 8 Nebraska (20-13, Feb. 4).

U-M has posted a 37-9 dual-meet record over Bormet's four seasons at the helm, including a 25-7 mark in Big Ten duals, and placed top-five at the NCAA Championships all three years the tournament was held, taking fifth place in 2019 and 2021 before this season's runner-up finish. Adding its fourth-place finish in 2018, U-M has now claimed four straight top-five NCAA finishes for the first time in program history.

Bormet has cornered 13 NCAA All-Americans as head coach -- plus four additional NWCA All-Americans during the 2019-20 season shortened by COVID. Of note, Myles Amine became a five-time All-American with this quarterfinal win yesterday -- and the first and only to achieve the feat through five top-eight placements at the NCAA Championships, while Amine, Suriano and Parris have all reached the NCAA finals over the last two seasons.

Bormet was also named the 2019 Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Coach of the Year.
