BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES GIRLS WRESTLING PROGRAM

The Waterloo Central School District Board of Education unanimously approved the addition of a girls wrestling program at its Aug. 29 meeting.

Waterloo joins Canandaigua as the second school in Section V to offer girls wrestling as a scholastic sport. Girls wrestling is considered an emerging sport by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and a committee is being formed at the state level.

"I am very pleased that Waterloo is able to provide this opportunity to our student-athletes," Superintendent of Schools Terri Bavis said. "I am happy that we are taking this step forward this year."

Waterloo has had about five girls compete on its wrestling team during the 20-year tenure of head coach Tyrone Thomas.

"This is an up-and-coming sport and I am very excited to have this opportunity," Thomas said. "I am optimistic that we can build this program and create something special."

The addition of girls wrestling provides funding for tournament registration fees, coaches and transportation to two tournaments.

"I appreciate the support of our Board of Education and Mrs. Bavis with this new endeavor," Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Christal Kent said. "I would like to personally thank Coach Thomas for always putting our student-athletes first and advocating for this addition. He is always willing to go above and beyond which is very much appreciated! His leadership in Waterloo Athletics and our wrestling program certainly shows in the success of his athletes."
