Golden Eagles Take 2nd at ECWC Championships, Snag Titles in 2 Weight Classes

Oswego, NY - On Saturday, November 19th the SUNY Brockport wrestling squad took second place overall with 132 points at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships. Brockport had a total of 11 place winners at the ECWC Championships, including two champions in Liam Bullock (125) and Elijah Sims (149).

In the 125-weight class, Liam Bullock marched through the competition for first place and 22 points for the team. He advanced past the first two rounds with wins by fall, before a sudden victory (SV-1, 6-4) in the quarterfinals. Bullock won a 4-3 decision in the semis before taking a medical forfeit victory for first place.

Nationally-ranked competitor, Elijah Sims dominated the 149-pound weight class on the day. He took the first two rounds by fall and cruised past the quarterfinals with a tech fall. Sims earned a 5-3 decision in the semifinals before a dominant 8-1 decision victory in the first-place match.

Francis Whitehouse scored 12.5 points for the Golden Eagles by taking sixth in the 141-division. After a first-round bye and second-round win by fall, Whitehouse lost a decision in the quarterfinals. He was able to bounce back with wins by fall and tech fall in the consolation on the way to sixth place.

Brockport had two place winners within the 165, 174, and 197 divisions at the ECWC Championships.

Matthew Kline pushed through the opening rounds to get into the first-place match at 165. Kline lost the 5-2 decision, resulting in 17 points from his second-place finish. Teammate Michael Fronczak battled his way through the consolation rounds to claim fifth place by medical forfeit at 165.

Gavin McLaughlin worked his way into the first-place match in the 174-pound division after getting a bye and a 4-3 decision win in the first two rounds. McLaughlin fell in the first-place match by tech fall, collecting 18 points for second place. Jared Zenie also battled throughout the day for 13.5 points at 174 for the team. He won multiple decisions on the way to a loss by fall in the third-place match to finish fourth.

Michael Sullivan and Nick Franco combined for 24 points to the team's total for their work in the 197-weight class. Sullivan took second place after his solid run was halted in the first-place match. He grabbed wins by fall and a 6-3 decision before losing the major decision in the finals. Franco battled back into the picture with a pair of wins by fall in the consolation bracket. He would work his way to sixth place after a medical forfeit in the fifth-place match.

Chris Eames got a bye to start the day in the 184-weight class bracket. He then grabbed back-to-back wins by fall in the second and quarterfinal rounds. A loss by decision in the semifinals and a pair of medical forfeits gave Eames sixth place.

Last but not least, Joe Yanis represented the Green and Gold in the heavyweight division at 285. A convincing 7-0 win by decision in the opening round set up a quarterfinal win by fall in just 2:49. Yanis grabbed another decision victory, 3-1, in the semifinals. His journey came to an end due to a sudden victory (SV-1, 3-1) by Oneonta's Jake Pine in the first-place match.

The Golden Eagles earn second at the ECWC Championships for the second straight season this weekend. They are back in action for the New Standard Corporation Invitational on December 2nd and 3rd at York College of Pennsylvania.
