Pine Places First in Weight Class, Oneonta State Finishes Sixth at ECWC Championships

Six Red Dragons Finished on Podium, Earning All-Conference

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Championships Saturday morning in Oswego. The team finished sixth overall and seniors Jacob Pine (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls) and Anthony Romero (Spring Valley/Ramapo) were two of the six Red Dragons that earned All-Conference honors. Pine won the 285 class and Romero finished second at 133.

Pine started strong with two straight pin victories. He pinned Luke Cawley of St. John Fisher in 29 seconds and then Billy Bumbarger in 2:34. In the semifinal, he won a 6-0 decision over Alfred State's Nick Barrett. In the first-place match, Pine was down 1-0 in the third period where he scored an escape to tie the match and force overtime. In the overtime period, Pine scored a takedown and won the final, 3-1, in sudden victory fashion.

After a first-round bye, Romero recorded five takedowns in a 10-2 major decision victory over Cortland's Devin Walker. He defeated Elijah Moshenek from Alfred State, 10-5, with a four-point nearfall in the second period, then beat Cortland's Cody Merwin with an 8-3 decision to advance to the first-place match. In the final, Romero recorded a few escapes but lost an 8-3 decision to Jayden Cardenas of Cortland.

Joining Pine and Romero for All-Conference honors were senior Michael Blando (Massapequa/Massapequa), sophomore Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA), junior Adonis Morano (), and sophomore Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip). Blando, Jackson and Poggi all finished fourth, while Morano finished fifth.

Blando wrestled at 149 and recorded two fall victories. He pinned St. John Fisher's Joshua Maslyn and then Alfred State's Gavin Hart in 1:41.

Jackson recorded two pins against Alfred State to get to the third-place match in the heavyweight division. In the third round on the consolation side of the bracket, Jackson had a 22 second fall victory against Keaton Renfrew and then a 3:20 pin against Barrett. In the third-place match, Jackson lost a 5-2 decision to Alfred State's Evan Albrecht.

In the 125 class, Poggi defeated RIT's John Freebern on a 5-3 decision and followed it up with a 3:00 pin victory over Cosmo Damiani from Ithaca.

Morano posted two pins in 174 on his way to a fifth-place finish. After a first-round bye he pinned St. John Fisher's Zach Miller in 1:12. In his next match, Morano was tied at four against Brockport's Jared Zenie before he recorded a fall win at 6:35.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, December 3rd, for the RIT Invitational.
