Week 6 - Monroe County Wrestling

Dual Meets:

Attica/Batavia and Brockport matched up this week to determine the king of League Division 3. The starting weight for this one was at the 132 lb class. Brockport jumped out to an early lead by winning the first four matches and launching the score to 21-0 in their favor. Attica/Batavia would respond by winning the next three bouts bringing the score to 21-18 at the halfway mark. Brockport's Gideon Leverenz would win the next match in overtime at 215 lbs which was then followed by a fall for Attica/Batavia as Wyatt Kaufman secured the pin at 285 lbs. Going into the 102 lb match the score was now tied at 24-24. Preston Bannister gave Attica/Batavia their first lead of the night when he pulled out a narrow 5-4 decision bringing the team score to 27-24 A/B with 3 matches to go. In the end, the Brockport lightweights of Matthew Durnell and Woodx2 proved to be too much and Brockport claimed the Division 3 title with a 42-27 victory.

Hilton remained unbeaten in League Division 2 as they defeated Churchville Chili 47-13. Jon Testa helped to lead Hilton in this one, as he bumped up a couple and managed to pull-off a major decision 12-3 at 118 lbs.
HFL and Canandaigua squared off to complete their league schedules for the season. HFL prevailed in this one 42-30. The night started at 102 lbs and HFL rattled off 7 straight wins all by fall. Canandaigua would capture the remaining weight classes.
Pittsford kept their chances alive at a League Division 1 Title as they took down Penfield 46-12. Rudy Antonucci would lead Pittsford with a major decision 10-1 at 132 lbs.
Webster Thomas closed out their league schedule with a win over Webster Schroeder 42-24. Connor Guffey and Jackson Harrision would provide the match of the night as this one was locked 0-0 at the end of regulation. In the first OT Guffey was able to score the winning takedown to help lead Thomas.
Brighton defeated Spencerport in a non-league match 48-16. Andrew Mark secured a fall at 152 lbs to help lead Brighton.
Fairport maintains a shot at winning the title in League D1 as they defeated Greece 57-7.

Section V Division 1 Duals Update: (Final 4 on Jan. 21 @ Fairport HS)

The first 3 teams have been determined for the Section V Duals as Brockport claimed the championship in League D3 and Attica/Batavia qualified with their 2nd place finish. Brockport will face the League D2 runner-up in the first round of the duals and A/B will face the League D1 runner-up. Hilton's League D2 Championship clinching win over Victor secures their spot in the duals. Hilton will receive a BYE in the first round. .



Tournaments:

The Victor Ahonen Duals did not disappoint and there were many outstanding matches throughout the day. Hilton finished in 2nd place losing only to team champions Canisteo Greenwood. HFL finished in 3rd place with their only loss also coming to Canisteo GW. Victor was 4th, Fairport 5th, RH 6th and Spencerport came in 7th. Tyler Simons of Hilton won the MOW for the Lightweight classes.

Both Pittsford and Webster Thomas attended the Daryl Pierson Duals at East Rochester. Pittsford went 4-1 in the tournament with their only loss coming to Thomas as the Titans won the tournament with a 5-0 record.

Irondequoit, Canandaigua, Webster Schroeder and Penfield all competed at the Red Jacket Invitational. Schroeder led the charge of the Monroe County schools with a 2nd place finish in the tourney. Five County wrestlers claimed championships in this one; Jackson Harrison of Schroder took top honors at 102 lbs., Kiernan Magee of Penfield took first place at 110 lbs., Mason Depew of Canandaigua won it at 189 lbs., Davis Damelio claimed the heavyweight title for Schroeder and Will Smith of Canandaigua gutted out a 5-3 decision at 152 lbs to win his championship. For his efforts, Smith was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.
