Dansville Way-Co's Wyatt Sartori headed to Albany Thursday February 23rd to this years New York State Wrestling Championships at the MVP Arena to wrestle along side over 500 other wrestlers searching for their spots on the podium. Wyatts first varsity season was beyond a success. Wyatt went 41-4 as a 7th grader in one of the strongest 102/104lb classes anyone has seen I'm quite some time. Weighing only 94lbs Wyatt would give up the better side of 10lbs to most opponents as well as 4-5 years of age to some. He would finish the first day 1-1 losing to Joe Scott from Letchworth (Section V) by score of 5-2 and winning 4-0 over Paul Minckler (Section VIII). This allowed him to move on to the blood round where he lost 10-3 to a very very tough opponent Charlie Wiley (SectionVIIII). Wyatt will surely be someone to watch over the next 5 years!
Coach Walker: "There's nothing like it, the State Tournament never seems to disappoint! We knew coming into this that this was one of the tougher brackets in the state. Just hammers where ever you looked. Wyatt had a goal to reach the State tournament and he did just that and made it to day 2 as the young one in the bracket. To go 41-4 as a smaller 7th grader is just stellar. Can't thank him or his parents enough for not only being a part of our team but our families! He and his family work so darn hard throughout the year and it really showed this year! We all learned alot this year and will be back better than ever next season!!! Proud of you Wyatt, so darn proud!"
DWC would finish their season 17-7 as a team, and 5-0 in the league clinching their first title in 11 years. Many impressive guys to look out for on this team next season. The team will surely be one of the top dogs for some time with how well this very young team competed this season. In the first two seasons of the new program these coaches have grown the program to not only win a league title but take a wrestler to the state tournament back to back years with many more years to return.
Thank you coaches Justin Walker, Joe Coburn, and Mike Mckenerick.
And huge thank you to Coach Ralph Perry and Coach Levi Wormuth for all the help and dedication to this season! Couldn't have been done without them!
