Cortland Wrestlers Finish Third at Roger Williams Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. - Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) and J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) each won weight-class titles and Christian Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville) and Cody Merwin (Walton) also placed in their weight classes to help Cortland finish third out of 12 schools at the Roger Williams Wrestling Invitational.

Cortland finished with 92 points. Castleton won the title with 197, followed by Wesleyan (119), Cortland, Norwich (87.5) and Roger Williams (85.5) in the top five.

Centrone finished 4-0 with two technical falls at 149 pounds. He won the title match with a 13-3 major decision over Castleton's Elijah Cyr. Cardenas went 3-0 with a technical fall and major decision at 133 pounds. He won in the finals versus Southern Maine's Jake Craig, 3-1.

Lievano placed fourth at 125 pounds with a 4-2 mark. Two of his wins came by pin. Merwin was sixth at 133 pounds with a 2-2 mark that included one pin.

Six other Red Dragons won three or more matches during the day. Rocca Futia (Wallkill) went 4-1 with a pin and tech fall at 133. Culley Bellino (Canastota) was 4-2 with three pins and a tech fall at 141, Hunter Hughes (Selden/Newfield) finished 4-2 with two pins and a tech fall at 157, and Dan Cassera (East Setauket/Ward Melville) went 4-2 with two pins at 165. Shane Walczyk (Eden) finished 3-2 at 141, with all three victories coming via pin, and Roman Jellick (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) was 3-2 with two pins at 285.

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 10 a.m. at RIT. The conference began sponsoring the sport this year for the first time since the 1990-91 school year.
