Cardinals Take Sixth Place In SUNYAC Championship

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University wrestling team were on the road on Saturday to compete in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship. The Cardinals took sixth place in the tournament.

Alex Samson and Braydon Vandenberg were both first-place finishers. Samson controlled the 141-pound class, starting with 15-0 win by technical fall. In the quarterfinal, he earned a pinfall victory at 4:41 before taking his place in the finals with an 8-3 decision. He wrapped up the competition with a 20-3 technical fall.

In the 197-pound bracket, Vandenberg came off a bye to secure a pinfall in 0:22. That pin was followed with another in the semi-final round in 0:59. He was not done pinning his opponents however, as he did so in the finals matchup against Oneonta, this time, it took 4:21.

Daniel Parkulo's was impressive in the 125-pound competition, taking second place and scoring 16.0 points for the team. He started with a win by pinfall in 4:43, before earning a victory by way of a 14-2 major decision. In the semi-final round, Parkulo secured his place in the final with a 10-7 sudden victory. However, he fell to Lee Rubin of RIT by way of 13-7 decision.

Joshua Maslyn earned sixth place in the 157-pound class to secure 11.0 team points, and Jackson Burns scored 12.0 team points after taking fifth place in the 285 pound weight class.

Up next for the Cardinals is the RIT invite hosted by RIT. The competition will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 with an anticipated start time of 9 a.m.
