Lints, Duke, and Chakouian Qualify for Nationals as No. 22 Elmira Women Place Fourth at Region 1 Championships

LOCK HAVEN, PA. - The Elmira College women's wrestling program will send three wrestlers to the 2024 NCWWC National Championships as the Soaring Eagles had nine individual place winners and finished fourth in the overall team standings on Saturday at the NCWWC Region I Championships hosted by Lock Haven University.

Zoey Lints '27 joined Skylah Chakouian '25 as the only member of the program to capture a regional championship as she punched her ticket to nationals along with Chakouian and Abby Duke '26. This will be the third appearance at nationals for Chakouian, while Lints and Duke will be making their first trip for the Soaring Eagles.

INDIVIDUAL FINISHERS: Duke (2nd - 109 lbs.), Edwards (6th - 123 lbs.) Bradigan (6th - 130 lbs.), Monterrosa (8th - 136 lbs.), Lints (1st - 143 lbs.), Chakouian (2nd - 155 lbs.), Dahlquist (7th - 170 lbs.), Caban (8th - 170 lbs.), Labady (5th - 191 lbs.)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Competing at 143 pounds for EC, Lints went 4-0 on the day to capture the Region 1 title as she notched a pair of falls to go along with one tech fall victory. In the title bout, Lints would be matched up against Khadijah Sanusi from Sacred Heart. In a battle of nationally ranked grapplers, Lints would come away victorious with a 5-4 decision.

Chakouian returned to the title bout at 155 pounds for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign and notched a top-three finish for the third consecutive year. Chakouian recorded a huge 5-2 decision against Tayla Tildsley from Sacred Heart in the semifinals to secure her spot in the title bout. Sacred Heart's Madison Sandquist would matchup against Chakouian in the finals with Sandquist recording a pin at the 1:24 mark.

After finishing sixth at 116 pounds during last year's regionals, Duke competed at 109 pounds for the Soaring Eagles and would make a run to the title bout after notching a 10-0 tech fall victory followed by an 8-0 decision against Ahsia Torres from Sacred Heart. Duke and Lock Haven's Kaelani Shufeldt would matchup in the title bout with Shufeldt finding a way to notch a pin at the 4:47 mark of the match.

Tayana Labady '25 advanced to the third-place match at 191 pounds for the Purple & Gold after winning a consolation semifinal bout against Zoe Waters from New England College. In the third-place bout, Sacred Heart's Jacklyn Smith won a 2-2 tiebreaker via criteria over Labady and would set up a true fourth-place bout against Sophie Pollack from Delaware Valley. Pollack secured the victory against Labady to officially finish fourth.

Elmira would receive a pair of sixth-place finishes from Megan Edwards '27 and Gabby Bradigan '26 at 123 and 130 pounds respectively. Edwards battled through a deep 123-pound bracket and opened her day with a pin against Delaware Valley's Bridgette Schoultz before falling against nationally ranked Mia Macaluso from East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. Edwards and Schoultz would matchup again in the fifth-place bout with Schoultz earning a tech fall victory.

Bradigan opened her tournament with a fall before dropping a 13-3 tech fall decision in the quarterfinals against Lillian Sherer from Lock Haven. Bradigan responded with a fall followed by a 9-5 decision in the consolation bracket to advance to the consi-semis and eventually the fifth-place bout before dropping an 8-5 decision against Lock Haven's Isabella Devito.

Leslie Monterrosa '24 notched her third consecutive regional podium finish for the Purple & Gold after competing at 136 pounds. Monterrosa recorded a 13-2 tech fall victory against Abbigail Kohl from Alvernia in the consolation bracket before dropping her seventh-place bout against Paisley Fox from Ursinus College.

Hazel Dahlquist '25 and Angelina Caban '26 would finish seventh and eighth, competing at 170 pounds for the Soaring Eagles as the duo would square off against each other in the seventh-place bout. Dahlquist would be victorious over Caban in the bout with a 10-0 tech fall.
