ATHOL SPRINGS - Gage LaPlante yearned to be one of the last ones standing.

But every time he would try to win a state championship, there was an obstacle standing in his way. As an eighth-grader in 2020, LaPlante won the Section VI Class A championship and Division I qualifier but lost in the consolation round at states at 99 pounds.
