Madison History

Originally opened as a junior high school in 1922, James Madison High School appeared on the Rochester wrestling scene in 1946. It continued its program until the high school building was closed by the Board of Education in June, 1981. The building was later demolished and a new middle school (James Madison School of Excellence) was built on some of the same property.

The current Madison opened in September, 1998. The "original" Madison was known as the Wilson Parkers and during the 1970's, they were called the Wilson Parker Bears because the cheerleaders wanted some type of mascot. The original school colors were Purple and Gold, the same as Madison today. Madison alumni regard the current Madison as a continuation of the old school and there are plaques (but not sports ones) and art work from the old building that have been placed in the current one.
