Grappling with adversity: Byron-Bergen wrestler battles opponents and rare birth defect
January 13, 2017

BERGEN — On the wall of the wrestling practice room at Byron-Bergen High School are printed the words "Pride," "Dedication" and "Sacrifice." Undoubtably words that have been lived by for numbers of wrestlers that have come through the Bees' system.

Throughout the Byron-Bergen grappling history, there have been numerous Section V champions — many of them multiple winners — and many athletes that have gone on to place at the New York State Tournament.

Yet the one that has likely made the most impact is one that won't go down in the lore of the greatest Byron-Bergen wrestlers in history. But the impact that senior Russell Cunningham has made on the program, and the school as a whole, isn't one that can be registered in a win-loss record or sectional titles.
