BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team fell to 12th-ranked Cornell, 31-6, on Monday night in an event billed "Mayhem on the Mainstage." For the first time in school history, the dual was held at the UB Center for the Arts, the campus' theatrical venue.

A strong Cornell squad entered the dual with four wrestlers ranked in the Top 20. Starting at 184, 11th-ranked Max Dean earned a major decision over Brett Perry and Ben Honis took a 6-1 decision from Joe Ariola to quickly take a 7-0 lead.

The Bulls battled back as Jake Gunning, ranked 20th in the nation at heavyweight, won his fifth straight dual with a 10-4 decision over Jeramy Sweany. Kyle Akins followed with a 3-0 decision over Mike Russo at 125 to cut the Cornell overall lead to 7-6.

Bryan Lantry lost a 3-2 decision in double-overtime to Chas Tucker at 133 and Blake Retell was pinned by #3 Yianni Diakomihalis at 149 to allow the Big Red to take control of the dual.

Cornell won the remainder of the matches to improve to 2-0 in duals on the season. Buffalo dropped to 3-4 in duals on the year.

"First off, I want to thank Allen Greene and the administration for putting this event on. It was a great crowd," head coach John Stutzman said. "We fought hard. I'm not disappointed with the effort. We got better tonight. We're making people believers in UB wrestling."

The Bulls will next compete at Midlands at the end of the calendar year before returning to dual action at Columbia on January 6.
