March 04, 2018

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Cornell crowned three champions, had three runner ups and two more third-place finishers as the Big Red placed second at the 2018 EIWA Championships at Hofstra. The Big Red's second-place team finish snapped an unprecedented string of 11 consecutive conference crowns, the longest in more than 100 years of EIWA wrestling. Seven finishers earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.

Freshmen Yianni Diakomihalis (141) and Ben Darmstadt (197), as well as junior Jon Jay Chavez (165) each won their first EIWA title, while sophomore Noah Baughman (125), junior Chaz Tucker (125) and freshman Max Dean (184) each advanced to the finals. Junior Brandon Womack won by fall at 174 to take third, while Jeramy Sweany earned a big decision over nationally-ranked Garrett Ryan to take third at heavyweight. All but Baughman qualified for NCAAs, though his one-point loss to the defending national champion at his weight class will keep him under consideration for an at-large berth.

Cornell's 146 points were behind only Lehigh (164.5), who crowned five champions. The Big Red's eight top three finishers was the most at the meet (Lehigh had six). Ivy rival Princeton took third (93), holding off Drexel (86.5) and Navy (83).
