Four Bulls Named to Academic All-MAC Wrestling Team

BUFFALO, NY - Four University at Buffalo wrestlers were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, the league announced on Monday. Kyle Akins and Brett Perry were named for the second straight season, while Ryan Kromer and Bryan Lantry were first time selections.

Akins is a social science interdisciplinary major with a 3.37 grade point average. He went 22-10 on the season, including 10-4 in duals and 5-1 in MAC duals. Akins had 10 takedowns and a team-best five reversals in duals on the season.

Perry is an engineering major with a 3.43 GPA. He started 16 duals at 184 lbs. and finished 8-16 on the season, including 7-9 in duals and 2-4 in MAC duals. In dual meets, Perry ranked fourth on the team with 17 takedowns and led the Bulls with 24 escapes.

Kromer, a management major with a 3.20 grade point average, went 5-10 on the season. He was the Bulls' starter at 174 lbs. for nine duals on the year.

Lantry is a management major with a 3.21 GPA. The redshirt-junior went 17-7 overall, 10-3 in duals and 4-1 in MAC duals. He finished second at the MAC Championships in the 133 lb. bracket to become just the third UB wrestler to be a three-time national qualifier.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
