CORNING — New York State Trooper Nicholas Clark, a [one-time] state wrestling champion at Canisteo-Greenwood High School and an All-American football player at Alfred University, was killed Monday after responding to a domestic dispute on Welch Road in the Town of Erwin, when he was shot by a suicidal man, according to State Police.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., Clark arrived on the scene, where he engaged suspect Steven Kiley, 43. After Clark was wounded, a Steuben County Sheriff's deputy arrived and pulled him to safety while engaging Kiley in gunfire. Barricaded at the location, crisis negotiators were unable to make contact with Kiley, reportedly a principal at Bradford (NY) Central School. Kiley was later found deceased with a gunshot wound, New York State Police 1st Deputy Chris Fiore detailed at a Monday afternoon press conference held at Painted Post State Police Barracks in Coopers Plains.
